More Information
You will need:
Students pursuing the MD and PhD degrees must be admitted to both the School of
Medicine and the Graduate School and should be registered concurrently. Applicants
interested in completing both degrees should apply through AMCAS and the usual medical
school admissions process, and indicate their interest in research. Typically, students
fulfill the preclinical training of their medical education, then focus upon their
graduate degree and then complete the clinical portion of their medical education.
Their registration changes from being primary in the SOM to primary in the Graduate
School and then back to primary in the SOM during these respective periods.
A plan of study for the graduate degree should be developed by the student and mentor
and must be approved by the director of graduate studies, the Sr. Associate Dean
for Research, the Associate Dean for Student Programs and the Graduate school. This
plan may include up to 30 hours of credit for SOM courses taken during the preclinical
portion of the MD degree program (Biochemistry 6 hrs, Microbiology 4 hrs, Immunology
3 hrs, Pharmacology 4 hours, Physiology 4 hrs, Pathology 6 hrs, and Neurosciences,
3 hrs).
