Left Background

Tom and Anne Smith MD-PhD Program

Overview

Jamal Ibdah, MD, PhD, gastroenterology director and Raymond E. and Vaona H. Peck Chair in Cancer Research, is one of the new breed of physician-scientists leading translational research and training at MU. He is helping the University develop a translational research center that will take advantage of new funding opportunities from the National Institutes of Health and other public and private sources.
Physician-scientists who complete an MD-PhD program are uniquely qualified to conduct, lead and train others in translational — or bench-to-bedside — research. This complex effort brings discoveries made at laboratory benches to the bedsides of patients in the form of new methods for treating, preventing and managing disease. Physician scientists and their translational research are expected to put medicine on a new path for the foreseeable future. Recent advances in medical research primarily occurred in the laboratories of academic medical centers, where progress produced unprecedented levels of interest and funding. Now, the focus has turned to producing an increased number of academic physicians who are well-trained in science and able to translate research to the bedsides of patients.
